Magnesium is a naturally occurring mineral in the body and naturally present in many of the foods we eat. We obtain magnesium from a well balanced diet, however there are times where our bodies do not either receive enough magnesium, our bodies can't absorb it or we excrete too much of it resulting in a magnesium deficiency.

The role of magnesium in the body is to regulate a number of biochemical reactions for maintaining normal muscle and nerve function, support the immune system, bone health, blood pressure regulation and heart rhythm.

Sources of Magnesium

Green leafy vegetables such as spinach, legumes, nuts (almonds, cashews, peanuts), seeds, whole grains, soy milk, brown rice, salmon, white potatoes, and oats to name a few common foods you may find in your pantry.

1. Magnesium prepares your body for sleep by relaxing your muscles.

2. Magnesium plays an important role in regulating your blood pressure. It relaxes “smooth muscle” cells, meaning those in your veins and arteries, so they don’t constrict the flow of blood.

3. Did you know that it’s impossible to digest food without magnesium? A deficiency contributes to your digestive trouble.

4. Magnesium is important to prevent bone loss. Research shows that people who get higher amounts of magnesium in their food and supplements have a higher bone mineral density.

5. A daily dose of 600 mg of magnesium has been shown to assist in the management and symptomatic relief of fibromyalgia, including symptoms such as pain and tenderness.

6. Muscle relaxation, cramps and spasm relief: Two mechanisms by which magnesium may induce muscle relaxation are; a suppression of the excitability of the muscle fibre membrane via acetyl choline inhibition and transportation of calcium out of the muscle fibre to inhibit muscle contraction and allow relaxation.

7. Migraines: Magnesium supplementation at a dose of 600 mg per day has been clinically shown to significantly decrease migraine frequency by 41.6%
